Dublin’s History
The City was originally settled by Vikings. The Vikings called the city “Dubh Linn” meaning Black Pool. The Vikings made a large settlement on the area now known as Wood Quay. The actual Dubh Linn was a lake that was subsequently covered abandoned in the Centuries. The Dubh Linn was situated where the Dubh Linn Gardens are now today. Tourists can visit the Gardens which are situated next to the Chester Beatty Library and Dublin Castle. Dublinia, located near Christchurch Cathedral offers a Viking Exhibition and Tour. It is a must see for any Dublin Sightseeing Tourist.
Ireland was part of the British Empire for over 700 years. This has had a great influence on the Architecture in Dublin. Perhaps the greatest example of this is Dublin Castle. Dublin Castle was the centre of British Control. Its architecture has evolved greatly since it was first built in 1204. Initially it had a typical Norman Design. However a fire broke out in 1673 meaning that no part of the Norman structure exists today with the exception of the Records Tower. The Castle has played a prominent role in Irish Rebellions against the British Crown. It was taken over temporarily by Irish Rebels during the famous Easter Rising in 1916. It was the main intelligence centre for British Authorities during the Irish War of Independence fought in subsequent years.
Some of Dublin’s most prominent Architecture exists from the Georgia n period. Famous Buildings such Parliament House (now Bank of Ireland on College Street) The Royal Exchange, The Four Courts and the Custom House were built during this time. The Guinness Brewery was also founded during this famous period. If you are to go on any Dublin Sightseeing Tours you will notice the beautiful contrast in architecture from different periods in Dublin’ s History.
